Today's Route [Lisbon to Santa Cruz]

After landing in Lisbon, we’ll drive toward the Sintra hills to explore the colorful fairytale beauty of the National Palace of Pena, then recharge with lunch at Tasco do Strauss before wandering the dreamy gardens and architecture of Monserrate. In the afternoon we’ll head up the coast for sweeping Atlantic views at Miradouro de São Sebastião in Ericeira. We’ll finish the day with a relaxed seaside dinner at Plaj Beach House before settling in for the night at the laid-back, oceanfront Cliff Surf House in Santa Cruz.

Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS)  [Lisbon]

Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is Lisbon’s main airport and the easiest gateway into the city and the rest of Portugal. It’s close to the center, so you can be on Lisbon’s streets or heading out on a road trip surprisingly fast. It’s a convenient starting point for adventures, like us, heading north to Sintra, the coast, and beyond. We'll arrive in Lisbon, go through customs, and pick up our rental car for the week

Farol do Cabo da Roca [Colares]

Farol do Cabo da Roca stands on the westernmost point of mainland Europe, perched dramatically above the Atlantic on rugged cliffs near Sintra. First lit in 1772, it is one of Portugal’s oldest lighthouses, guiding ships past the windswept edge of the continent. The sweeping ocean views and raw coastal scenery make it feel like the very end of the world. 

Lunch at Toca do Júlio [Colares]

Our first meal in Portugal is at Julio’s Toca in Colares, a much-loved local restaurant known for its hearty Portuguese and Mediterranean dishes served in a relaxed, garden-like setting with a lovely terrace. It’s praised for generous portions of classics like grilled octopus, lamb and cod, friendly service, and good value. Diners often highlight its warm atmosphere and attentive staff, making it a great spot for a casual lunch or dinner when exploring the Sintra region.

Park and Palace of Monserrate [Sintra]

The Park and Palace of Monserrate in Sintra is a dreamy blend of exotic gardens and a beautifully ornate Romantic palace. The park feels like a botanical wonderland, with winding paths, rare plants, and hidden corners that stay cool and lush year-round. It’s one of Sintra’s most peaceful spots, perfect for slowing down and wandering.

Miradouro de São Sebastião [Ericeira]

Ericeira is a laid-back coastal town known for surf culture, dramatic cliffs, and an easygoing village vibe. Miradouro de São Sebastião is a scenic viewpoint where you can soak up sweeping Atlantic views and watch the waves roll in below. It’s the kind of place that feels calm and refreshing, especially around sunset.

Dinner at Plaj Beach House [Santa Cruz]

Dinner is at Plaj Beach House in Santa Cruz, a stylish beachside hangout with a relaxed, sunny vibe right on the ocean. It’s a great spot for casual bites and drinks, especially with seafood-forward plates and beachy comfort food. Think fresh fish, shrimp, and easygoing shareables that pair perfectly with a sunset cocktail.
